MoH celebrates Hari Raya Haji

THE Ministry of Health (MoH) distributed buffalo meat to its staff yesterday in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidil Adha, also known as Feast of Sacrifice.

The ministry slaughtered 10 buffaloes to mark Aidil Adha, an important date in the Islamic calendar which marks the culmination of the annual Haj pilgrimage.

Minister of Health Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohd Yusof handed out the meat to male staff of MoH yesterday, particularly low income earning staff.

Meanwhile, Deputy Permanent Secretary Hjh Siti Mariam Hj Md Jaafar presented the meat packs to female staff at the ministry’s headquarters in Berakas.

This is one of the religious activities the ministry carries out annualy to raise awareness on religious practices and to promote Islam.

Aidil Adha is celebrated by Muslims around the world with the symbolic korban (sacrificial rite) of livestock, representing the sacrifice the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was prepared to make to Allah (SWT) when he was commanded to slaughter his son, Prophet Ismail (AS). This event demonstrated both prophets’ obedience to Allah (SWT).

Government agencies, village councils and other bodies around Brunei customarily slaughter livestock and distribute the meat to the poor and needy in all four districts.

This year, over a thousand cattle, including cows, buffaloes and goats were brought in from Brunei’s cattle ranch in the Northern Territory of Australia for Aidil Adha.
